THE CULPEPPERS STORY
Robert Culpepper is the oldest documented Culpepper born in 1817 in GEORGIA into slavery. His parents are unknown but it is documented in the census that they were from Virginia. His wife was named Eliza and there is no known maiden name for her and her and her parents were also from Virginia and she was born in 1821. Slavery did not end in Texas until 1865 and many slaves took the surname of their former masters thus our last name Culpepper. The 1870 US census shows Robert and Eliza Culpepper and their children daughters Leereasy then 18 yrs and Delia then 14 yrs and their son Warren then 11 yrs old living in the Danville precinct of Willis, Texas in Montgomery County, Texas 03 Jun 1870. The Montgomery County, Texas census shows that there were no caucasian Culpeppers there prior to 1940.
The 1880 US census shows Robert (Bob) and wife Eliza living in precinct 1 in Montgomery County, Texas with their two Granddaughters Elizabeth then 6 yrs old and Rosa then 4 yrs old. The census shows that Lizzie Culpepper then 6 yrs old lived there also and she may have been a niece or cousin. The Culpeppers were farmers and also had farmhands living on the land with them. Clarissa Duncan was the oldest farmhand at 29 yrs of age and was a widow. Her children were Sallie, amy, and Henderson Duncan.
By 1880 Warren Culpepper now 29 yrs old lived in the same precinct and probably next door and was married to Polly Culpepper. They had two sons named Leroy born 1871 and Phillip born 1872.
The 1900 census shows Leroy and his wife Rebecca living in Montgomery County precinct and his occupation being a farmer. His brother Phillip also lived in precinct 1 of Montgomery County and his wife was named Victoria. The 1920 census of Montgomery County, Texas shows Phillip Culpepper at age 48 yrs old living there with his children Robert Lee Culpepper age 15 and Phil R Culpeppper age 16 YRS OLD. His wife Victoria was not mentioned. Leroy Culpepper age 41 yrs old and his wife Rebecca and their children Lola age 19, Lizzie age 18, Warren age 17, Sarah age 12, and John age 7 yrs old also lived in Montgomery County probably in the same area.
My mothers name was Clarice Culpepper Anderson and she is the daughter of Johnny and Mattie Culpepper my Grandparents. Johnny Culpepper and Mattie Culpepper children were named Clarice, Gerald and Geraldine the twins, Tommy, Clarence and Willie Culpepper.
